ANCHORS UP WEEKLY: OCEAN FREIGHT

California and Georgia Taking on Severe Port Congestion

California: Continual port congestion along California’s coast is still high concern, with no ‘quick fix’ in sight. Here are two ports to be aware of:

Los Angeles/Long Beach: As of 3/16, there are still over 42 anchored vessels waiting to dock at the port. With COSCO’s decision remaining to not dock at this port until it clears up, the congestion still continues.

Oakland/San Francisco: As of 3/16, there are now over 17 anchored vessels waiting to dock at the port, compared to 13 on 3/10 (via Freightwaves). This is a new stress point of the port congestion we have been seeing, due to the elongated period of congestion at Long Beach.

Georgia: As of 3/16, 27 vessels are waiting to dock at the Savannah port. This is a 3-week high according to Freightwaves, who reported only 10 last week, and 22 the week before.

Interlog’s Expert Suggestions:

  1. Both Long Beach and Oakland ports should be avoided to ensure preferred transit times. To confidently re-route your cargo to other West-Coast ports, please reach out to our team today. We are actively staying up to date on availably.
  2. With the stark increase compared to last week, Savannah has the potential to quickly reach a similar level of congestion as Long Beach. Rerouting away from Savannah for the time being is recommended.

WHEELS UP WEEKLY: AIR FREIGHT

United States and German Airport Collaboration

Chicago Rockford International Airport and Cologne Bonn Airport have announced a partnership together to bring a streamlined cargo service between Germany and the US (Freightwaves)

The  airports stated that they “hope to create a more synchronized air link with similar operational standards and capabilities on each end that will be attractive to cargo airlines and logistics companies eager to avoid bottlenecks currently plaguing many gateway airports.”

Why this project is something to keep tabs on:

While focusing on cargo shipping between these two airports, cargo shipping limitations that we have experienced due to the lack of passenger travel could become a less common occurrence. It was reported that there was over a 19% decrease in cargo availability due to the decrease of passenger travel.

Projects and collaborations like this one could alleviate such a large amount of cargo shipping being affected by passenger travel.
