Another container terminal is set to be added at the Port of Savannah!
Recently, the Georgia Ports Authority announced that it is set to begin the permitting process for its plans to add a third Savannah container terminal.
Something unique about this potential 395-acre container terminal is it would be located on an island in the middle of the Savannah River.
What the Hutchinson Island Terminal Would Entail
The Port Authority says it’ll begin construction on the terminal starting in 2026, with hopes of completion by 2030.
Hutchinson Island Terminal is being touted as a ‘favorable location’ in terms of traffic and rail. Additionally, as Transport Topics notes, the site connects directly to U.S. Route 17 and Interstate 16 with both routes will be widened.
This new terminal “will allow GPA to meet future demands for container volumes, to grow with the growing economy, and to accommodate the changing trends to transportation and shipment of goods across the Southeast,” said Christopher Novack, GPA Director of Engineering and Facilities Maintenance.
Additionally, the GPA says this third container terminal would allow the port to handle three million containers a year.
Growth at the Port
The Garden City Terminal West expansion plan is also underway and will add another million TEUs when the stages are completed in 2024. This expansion will also include an additional 15 electric rubber-tire gantry cranes, once completed.
Another expansion plan will include the Colonel’s Island Terminal in Brunswick, which is currently going through a $250 million, 100-acre “facelift.” This expansion plan allows the port to increase their ro/ro capacity from 1.2 million, to 1.4 million vehicles annually.
Griff Lynch, Executive Director of Georgia Ports Authority expects the U.S. Southeast to continue growing fast.
