Latest Industry Happenings and Market Updates:

IMPORT: Asia to North America (TPEB)

Rates: General rate increases (GRIs) were implemented Jun. 1, affecting all U.S. coasts. Continuing occurrences of GRIs have accelerated rates to high levels. In addition, strong demand has allowed these increases to sustain over the last several weeks.
Space: Space has tightened due to both rising demand and, while not as frequent as the past several months, carrier-enforced blank sailings.
Capacity: Generally speaking, vessel capacity has been better served across the market as demand prompts more utilization.
Equipment: Rising demand and longer vessel transits for outbound shipments from China have led to a crunch in equipment capacity at Chinese ports, notably Ningbo, Dalian, and Guangzhou.

In addition to this market, the equipment deficit has especially hindered Asia-Europe trade.

TIPS:

  • Hold your logistics partners accountable for frequent updates regarding current market conditions and routing impacts.
  • As the market shows indicators of heating up, familiarize yourself with the potential hurdles that can occur amid cases of tightened capacity and handling delays.

IMPORT: Europe to North America (TAWB)

Rates: Rates continue to ebb and flow.
Space: Space is open.
Capacity: Reassuring demand from U.S. importers has prompted better utilization of available capacity.

TIPS:

  • Book at least three weeks prior to the ready date.
  • Keep an eye on East Coast labor uncertainty as a coastwide strike could occur as early as October if no contract is settled between dockworkers and maritime employers.

EXPORT: North America to Asia

Rates: Rates are appearing to level off after an accelerated rise throughout May.
Capacity: Generally speaking, capacity is available, but U.S. export movement can be influenced, even hindered, when more attention is placed on the import market.

TIPS:

  • Insufficient communication with sailing schedules can lead to higher detention and demurrage fees as well as higher trucking and storage costs. Ensure your logistics partners are not keeping you and your cargo in the dark.

Port of Singapore Dealing With Extensive Congestion

There’s been reports that the Port of Singapore is experiencing significant amounts of congestion.

According to Linerlytica, berthing delays at the port have been up to 7 days and total capacity waiting to berth at the port has been at 450,000 TEUs in recent days.

They have reactivated some of their older berths and yards to help mitigate this backlog. This will allow the Port to handle 50,000 more TEUs weekly.  The Port also plans to add three new berths with operations for those set to begin later this year.

It’s been a busy year so far for the Port of Singapore. In a statement, the Port says they have continued to see a significant increase in vessel arrivals since the start of this year. They noted they have handled 13,390,000 TEUs from January to April – an 8.8% increase in container volumes compared to the same period last year.

Global Schedule Reliability in April Dips to January 2024 Levels

Global schedule reliability in the month of April decreased by 2.5 percentage points when compared to the month prior (March).

This is only 0.6 percentage points higher than the lowest point this year (January), per data compiled by Sea-Intelligence. However, when compared on a year-over-year basis, the month of April 2024 is still 12.1 percentage points higher than in April 2023.

Schedule reliability is important because it provides a sense of security that your goods will arrive on their scheduled time. The on-time scheduled arrival of your goods plays a crucial role in the shipping process and can ultimately play a role in your customers satisfaction.
