Fire from Truck Carrying Lithium Batteries Disrupts Operations at the Port of Los Angeles

Operations at the Port of Los Angeles were disrupted on Thursday when an overturned tractor trailer carrying lithium batteries caught fire near Ocean & Navy Way on Terminal Island, resulting in the closure of several terminals.

In a statement, the Port of LA said the accident site at Terminal Island has been cleared and roadways (including the Vincent Thomas Bridge and Seaside Avenue) have reopened. Additionally, the terminals that were closed due to this incident were reopened this past Saturday to full operations.

Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal Reopens for Business with New Opportunities for Growth

The Hugh K. Leatherman marine terminal at the Port of Charleston will officially reopen to container ships this week with an ad hoc vessel call, the Journal of Commerce reports. ZIM is the first carrier to establish a weekly trans-Pacific service there. This development follows a new agreement between the port and the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), enabling state dockworkers to join the union.

Leatherman Terminal is the first new ocean terminal to launch in the United States in over a decade. This opening adds 700,000 TEUs to Charleston Harbor’s capacity, with a projected full build-out capacity of 2.4 million TEUs, SC ports said in a statement. They also add that this reopening makes their port system more competitive in the Southeast and they are well equipped to support this continued growth.
