Reshuffling of Ocean Alliances This Year

New arrangements, partnerships and alliances are being reshuffled, with some set to begin in February. Here’s a bit of a breakdown of the reshuffling and what their service networks will focus on.

Ocean Alliance (made up of Cosco, OOCL, Evergreen, and CMA CGM) recently revealed their shipping network for this year. This alliance will continue to have a large focus on the Asia-North America and transpacific lanes. Also, they have services along the Asia-North Europe, Asia-Mediterranean, and Asia-Middle East routes. When transit through the Suez Canal is deemed safe, the Alliance will add more routes to their Middle Eastern and Mediterranean networks.

Premier Alliance (made up by Yang Ming, ONE, and HMM), formerly known as THE Alliance,  will be offering a variety of routes on the Asia-Europe and Asia-North America services – many of which will be in a vessel sharing agreement with MSC.

Gemini Cooperation (made up by Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk) will have a fleet pool of about 290 vessels with a combined capacity of 3.4 million TEUs. Gemini’s goal is to improve schedule reliability through their hub-and-spoke model, to help minimize direct port calls.

MSC has chosen to operate independently after their 2M alliance with Maersk ends in early February, though they will collaborate with the Premier Alliance on Asia-Europe routes. Their network will feature numerous services across major trade lanes, offering over 1,900 direct port pairs.
